Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya says the Government is taking steps to establish a more effective system for maintaining and repairing digital educational equipment in schools across the country.
Speaking in Parliament today (8), the Prime Minister said the programme covers equipment including computers, multimedia projectors and Smart Boards.
She said a pool of specially trained teachers has already been established to handle hardware and networking maintenance at school level. In the Northern Province, 76 teachers have been assigned across 13 education zones for this purpose.
The Government plans to expand the pool of trained personnel to address existing shortages, with another group of teachers scheduled to undergo specialised training in October 2026, she said.
Amarasuriya also said arrangements were being made to establish a formal payment mechanism for teachers assigned to maintenance work, including payments for travel expenses.
She was responding to a question raised by Parliamentarian Thurairasa Ravikaran.
The Prime Minister said the Ministry of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education has provided additional funding to provincial authorities for repairing digital education infrastructure, with significant allocations made during 2025 and 2026, including for the Northern, Eastern and North Western Provinces.
The Government is also working with the Special Task Force to update guidelines on maintaining digital educational equipment, which will later be issued to schools.
Meanwhile, equipment whose warranty periods have expired is being repaired by obtaining quotations at the lowest possible rates.
The Government is also taking steps to train students at provincial level so they can assist with the maintenance of digital educational equipment in schools, the Prime Minister said.
