September 11, 2026

Inspector General of Police Priyantha Weerasooriya has instructed the Police Special Investigation Unit to conduct an internal inquiry into shortcomings and lapses identified during the ongoing investigation into the smuggling of illicit drugs from Pakistan to Sri Lanka.

The consignment was seized after being found concealed in two containers transported from Pakistan and held at the Colombo Port’s CICT terminal.

According to the Police Media Division, the internal inquiry has been ordered to examine the shortcomings identified in the handling of the case and determine how the lapses occurred.

Police emphasized that the internal inquiry will not interfere with or affect the ongoing preliminary investigations into the seized containers and the suspected drug consignment.

Further investigations into the containers are being conducted by the Central Crime Investigation Bureau.

The Police Media Division said the investigation is being carried out transparently and in accordance with established legal procedures and due process.
