The Sub-Committee on Education Reforms has proposed reducing the number of subjects for the G.C.E. Ordinary Level examination to seven, with History and Aesthetics included among the subjects.
The proposal was discussed at a recent meeting chaired by Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education Harini Amarasuriya.
The committee also revealed plans to introduce new modules on Social Cohesion, Law and Ethics for students in Grades 12 and 13.
The meeting reviewed progress on general education and preschool education reforms scheduled to be implemented from 2027.
As part of the initial phase, activity books, teacher guides and modules have been prepared for Grades 2 and 6, while teacher training programmes are currently underway. Awareness programmes on the proposed reforms are also expected to be launched soon.
The committee further noted that a National Preschool Education Policy has been formulated to formalize early childhood education. The policy includes preschool registration, syllabus development, teacher guides and training programmes, which are being implemented.
