BYD has announced a recall of 32,009 Shark 6 plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) due to a defect that could cause the spare wheel to detach from the vehicle.
The recall affects all three variants of the Shark 6: Premium, Performance and Dynamic Cab Chassis.
According to BYD, the spare wheel retention cable could be damaged if the spare wheel is mounted incorrectly, the wheel rim is positioned improperly, or the retaining bolts are not tightened sufficiently.
The company said movement and friction during vehicle operation could cause the cable to break, potentially resulting in the spare wheel becoming detached and creating a serious safety risk to other road users.
The affected vehicles were manufactured between August 2024 and June 2025. The recall covers 28,543 Premium units, 2,100 Performance units and 1,366 Dynamic Cab Chassis units.
BYD has advised owners of affected vehicles to remove the spare wheel until the required repairs are completed.
Owners can check whether their vehicle is included in the recall by entering its Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on BYD’s official vehicle recall information page. If a vehicle is identified as part of the affected batch, BYD will replace the spare wheel assembly free of charge.
The Shark 6 was introduced to the Australian market in October 2024 and recorded strong initial sales, with nearly 5,000 units sold during the first three months of 2025. Sales later declined following the expiry of tax exemptions and other incentives previously available for plug-in hybrid vehicles.
