The main opposition Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) staged a protest near Parliament in Battaramulla on Thursday, calling on the Government to withdraw the proposed 22nd Amendment to the Constitution.
The demonstration was held near Polduwa Junction, where SJB members and supporters gathered despite rainy weather. Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa also joined the protest.
The protesters called for the withdrawal of the proposed amendment, which the SJB has opposed, citing concerns over its potential implications for judicial independence and the rule of law.
The protest took place as Parliament began debating the 22nd Amendment on Thursday. The debate is scheduled to continue on Friday.
The Supreme Court has determined that the proposed amendment does not require approval at a referendum and can be passed by a special majority in Parliament.
