Former Deputy Leader of the United National Party (UNP) and Member of Parliament Ravi Karunanayake has officially written to the Speaker of Parliament, respectfully declining the medical insurance facility provided to MPs in light of the ongoing economic hardships in the country.
In his letter, Karunanayake pointed out that he had similarly turned down this benefit in 2026, requesting at the time that the allocated funds be directed toward a meaningful public cause.
Emphasizing the responsibility of public representatives during challenging economic times, the MP stressed that those privileged to serve the public must act with empathy, solidarity, and leadership by example.
Karunanayake requested that the provisions allocated to him under the insurance scheme be legally and administratively redirected to support vulnerable communities, including children, the elderly, and impoverished individuals suffering from serious illnesses.
He reiterated that his decision stems from a commitment to prioritizing public service over political privileges and upholding the principles of prudent state resource management.
