Chief of Defence Force of the Maldives Meets with Sri Lankan Defence Secretary

The Chief of Defence Force of the Maldives, Lieutenant General Abdul Raheem Abdul Latheef, currently on an official visit to Sri Lanka, paid a courtesy call to Defence Secretary General (Retd.) Kamal Gunaratne on Thursday (Feb. 8).

The meeting, held at the Defence Headquarters Complex in Sri Jayewardenepura Kotte, saw Lt. Gen. Latheef expressing his keenness to strengthen the defense cooperation between the Maldives and Sri Lanka.

Discussions revolved around bolstering collaboration in various areas such as military training, strategic partnerships, and security initiatives, as outlined by the Ministry of Defence.

The Defence Secretary commended the longstanding alliance between the Maldives and Sri Lanka, affirming their joint dedication to regional stability and security.

Both parties underscored the significance of ongoing dialogue and exchange programs to enhance defense capabilities and advance peace in the region.

Lt. Gen. Latheef, a graduate of the Defence Services Command and Staff College, Batalanda, was recently appointed as the Chief of the Maldivian Defence Force by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.
