PM Harini Amarasuriya Stresses Importance of Research for National Development

Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya reaffirmed the government’s commitment to reshaping Sri Lanka’s future through investments in research and development. She made these remarks at the Digital Library Conference 2024, organized by the National Science Foundation, held at the Colombo Medical College yesterday.

“We believe that investment in research and development is critical for the government’s development agenda,” said the Prime Minister. “Our aim is to redirect the country onto a new path, one based on research, evidence, and data, rather than continuing in the same direction as the past 75 years.”

Highlighting challenges in governance, she added, “At the highest levels of decision-making, choices are often not informed by science, evidence, or data. This must change. Moving forward, closer collaboration between decision-makers and the research community is essential for effective governance.”

The conference was attended by distinguished guests, including National Science Foundation Chairman Professor Saman Seneweera, Director General Dr. Sepalika Sudasinghe, and National Science Library Resource Center Head Manjula Karunaratne, along with researchers, librarians, and scholars.
