Former Deputy Leader of the United National Party and Parliamentarian Ravi Karunanayake said that the people of the country are suffering as a result of the short-sighted decisions taken by former rulers.
He pointed out that the decision to abolish the National Insurance Trust Fund was one such action, describing it as a grave mistake with long-term consequences. According to the MP, had the fund remained in place, the public would have benefited from substantial relief during the natural disasters that have affected the country.
Ravi Karunanayake further said that in the absence of such an insurance mechanism, the financial burden of disaster-related expenditure would eventually fall on the public through increased taxes.
He also alleged that those responsible for these short-sighted decisions did not stop there, but went on to make various false allegations against him.
