The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Lands and Irrigation has announced that February 2026 will be designated as Agricultural Insurance Month, aimed at encouraging farmers to obtain insurance coverage for their crops.
Under the scheme, farmers can insure all major crops, including rice, beans, potatoes, big onions, soybeans, and chili. The insurance covers damages caused by rain, floods, wild elephant attacks, pest infestations, fire, diseases, and other natural hazards.
The Ministry stated that the insurance plans are available at a minimal premium and provide financial protection against crop losses resulting from natural disasters.
For crops such as coffee, mung beans, ginger, chili, cashew nuts, sesame, and corn, the insurance premium is set at 7% of the sum insured, amounting to Rs. 60,000 per acre.
Similarly, crops including manioc, beetroot, pumpkin, carrot, leeks, beans, bitter gourd, capsicum, tomato, and long beans can also be insured with a 7% premium per acre, granting full insurance coverage.
In addition, attractive insurance schemes have been introduced for ginger, turmeric, cinnamon, black pepper, pineapple, papaya, and banana, allowing farmers to secure protection against potential losses under favorable premium terms.
Accordingly, the Ministry of Agriculture has urged farmers to obtain insurance coverage to safeguard their crops against natural and unforeseen risks.
