Amended Provincial Councils Elections Bill to Be Presented to Parliament Next Week

The Ministry of Public Administration, Provincial Councils, and Local Government has announced that the amended Provincial Councils Elections Bill will be tabled in Parliament next week.

According to Minister Professor Chandana Abeyrathna, the bill has already been gazetted. If it faces no legal objections, the legislation is expected to be passed by the end of this month.

Following the bill’s passage, the government plans to conduct Provincial Council elections before April, ensuring the schedule does not clash with the GCE Ordinary Level Examination.

The elections, initially set for 2023, were delayed due to insufficient financial allocations from the treasury. To address this, the Cabinet recently decided to annul the previous nominations, allowing new voters the opportunity to participate in the upcoming polls.
