Angelo Mathews Announces Retirement from Test Cricket After First Bangladesh Match

Former Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews has announced his retirement from Test cricket, confirming that the upcoming first Test against Bangladesh, scheduled from June 17 to 21, will be his final red-ball appearance for the national team.

The 37-year-old veteran all-rounder shared the news in a heartfelt statement on Friday, expressing both pride in his career and confidence in the future of Sri Lankan cricket.

“Whilst I bid adieu to the Test format, as discussed with selectors, I will remain available for selection in the white-ball format, if and when my country needs me,” Mathews stated.

Praising the current squad, he added, “I believe this Test team is a talented side with many future and present greats playing the game. Now seems like the best time to make way for a younger player to take the mantle and shine for our nation.”

Reflecting on his career, Mathews said, “It is time for me to say goodbye to the most cherished format of the game — international Test cricket! The past 17 years of playing for Sri Lanka has been my highest honour and pride. Nothing can match that feeling of patriotism and servitude when one dons the national jersey.”

“I have given my everything to cricket, and cricket has given me everything in return, shaping me into the person I am today. I stand grateful to the game and thankful to the thousands of Sri Lanka Cricket fans who have supported me throughout my career — during my highest of highs and lowest of lows.”

Mathews retires after a distinguished Test career, having represented Sri Lanka in 118 matches. He amassed 8,167 runs at an impressive average of 44.62 and took 33 wickets, leaving behind a legacy as one of the most reliable and respected players of his generation.
