The Australian High Commission Colombo has confirmed it is aware of irregularities linked to payments owed to the Australian Government, as investigations continue in Sri Lanka.
In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), the High Commission said Sri Lankan authorities are currently probing the matter in coordination with Australian officials, who are providing assistance.
Australia has also reiterated its commitment to supporting Sri Lanka’s return to debt sustainability while inquiries are ongoing.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Finance Sri Lanka confirmed on April 22 that cyber hackers had gained unauthorised access to a computer system within the ministry, triggering criminal investigations.
The breach targeted the External Resources Department, with complaints already lodged with law enforcement agencies and relevant institutions.
According to the ministry, the intrusion was identified during an investigation into a foreign currency transaction made in January 2026. Following this, authorities alerted the Sri Lanka Computer Emergency Readiness Team and the Computer Crime Investigation Division.
Further investigations led to formal complaints being filed with the Criminal Investigation Department Sri Lanka and the Financial Intelligence Unit Central Bank of Sri Lanka.
Investigations into both the cyber breach and the related payment irregularities are ongoing.
