The Australian government has issued an updated travel advisory urging its citizens to exercise heightened caution when travelling to Sri Lanka due to the risk of public protests and broader security concerns.
“We continue to advise that a high level of caution is required when travelling to Sri Lanka. A visa, which can be obtained in the form of an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA), is required to enter Sri Lanka. Limited availability of the e-Travel Authorization upon arrival at Bandaranaike International Airport in Colombo should be obtained before travelling,” the advisory stated.
The update warns that public protests may occur across the country, potentially disrupting traffic and public transport.
Travellers are advised to avoid areas where demonstrations are taking place, follow the instructions of local authorities, and stay updated through local media.
The advisory further cautions that crimes such as sexual assault, harassment, and robbery remain possible, urging travellers to remain vigilant at all times.
