The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) has urged the Government to incorporate the subject of Law into the national school curriculum, stressing its importance as a foundation for civic consciousness and democratic values.
In a letter addressed to Prime Minister and Education Minister Harini Amarasuriya, the BASL proposed introducing Law or a related subject as a compulsory component at the primary level, and as an elective subject at the G.C.E. Advanced Level.
Welcoming the Ministry of Education’s plans for wide-ranging reforms in the sector, the BASL noted that early legal education would help shape responsible, informed citizens.
“Many countries have already introduced Law into their school curricula, recognising it as a fundamental building block of civic engagement and democratic participation,” the BASL stated.
The Association also pledged its full support to the Ministry and other state institutions in designing and reviewing the proposed curriculum, ensuring it upholds academic rigor while reflecting Sri Lanka’s legal and cultural context.
The letter was signed by BASL President Rajeev Amarasuriya and Secretary Chathura Galhena.
