The Consumer Affairs Authority Sri Lanka says it carried out 7,334 successful raids across Sri Lanka between January 2026 and the end of April.
According to the Authority, the operations were aimed at preventing market exploitation and ensuring a fair trading environment for consumers.
Legal action has been filed against traders found violating consumer protection laws, while courts have imposed fines totaling Rs. 89,689,000 in relation to these cases.
The districts reporting the highest number of raids were:
- Kurunegala District – 654 raids
- Colombo District – 519 raids
- Puttalam District – 511 raids
- Kandy District – 502 raids
- Matale District – 439 raids
During the inspections, officials focused heavily on the quality and pricing of essential consumer goods commonly used on a daily basis.
The Authority stated that strict checks were carried out on products including rice, sugar, biscuits, soft drinks, bottled drinking water, cosmetic creams, and electrical items such as sockets and wire cords.
The Consumer Affairs Authority has urged the public to report unfair trade practices, the sale of substandard goods, or price-related complaints through its hotline 1977 during office hours.
