The Cabinet has approved the appointment of a special committee to oversee the implementation of recommendations made by the Presidential Commission of Inquiry and the former Sectoral Oversight Committee on National Security in relation to the 2019 Sri Lanka Easter Sunday bombings.
According to the Cabinet decision, approval had previously been granted at the Cabinet meeting held on May 17, 2021, to implement the recommendations of both bodies, which were tasked with investigating the attacks and proposing measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
However, authorities have noted that a systematic and consistent mechanism has not yet been established to monitor the practical implementation of these recommendations. As a result, there is currently no formal method to evaluate progress.
Recognising this gap, the Cabinet has emphasised the need to establish a comprehensive organisational structure that prioritises public and national security.
Accordingly, approval has been granted for a proposal submitted by the President, in his capacity as Minister of Defence, to appoint a committee under the supervision of the Presidential Secretariat. The committee will include representatives from relevant ministries and institutions, along with an expert in counter-terrorism and national security.
The move is expected to strengthen oversight and ensure the effective implementation of key recommendations aimed at enhancing national security and preventing future threats.
