The Cabinet of Ministers has approved a new initiative to expedite the passport application process for Sri Lankans living overseas by leveraging digital technology.
Under the proposed system, Sri Lankans will be able to apply for passports through designated Sri Lankan missions and offices abroad, significantly reducing delays and simplifying the application process.
According to Cabinet Spokesman and Minister of Health and Mass Media, Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa, the project aims to streamline passport issuance by establishing biometric capture stations and enabling real-time online connectivity with the Department of Immigration and Emigration.
The government plans to seek funding from the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) to support the initiative, which includes:
-
Supplying biometric equipment,
-
Setting up infrastructure across 20 selected Sri Lankan missions/offices overseas,
-
Procuring necessary software and technical support.
The Cabinet approved the joint proposal submitted by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism, and the Minister of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs.
Once implemented, the project is expected to greatly ease the burden on Sri Lankans abroad, ensuring quicker access to essential travel documentation through secure, online processes.
