The Cabinet of Ministers Sri Lanka has granted approval to repeal the Chief of Defence Staff Act No. 35 of 2009.
Initial approval to draft the repeal bill was granted during the Cabinet meeting held on 24 February 2025.
The draft bill prepared to abolish the Act has since received clearance from the Attorney General’s Department Sri Lanka.
Cabinet has now approved the proposal submitted by Anura Kumara Dissanayake, in his capacity as Minister of Defence, to publish the draft repeal bill in the Government Gazette and subsequently present it to Parliament for approval.
The move marks the next step in the legislative process required to formally abolish the existing law governing the office of the Chief of Defence Staff.
