Cabinet Approves Move to Repeal Parliamentary Pensions Act

November 19, 2025

The Cabinet of Ministers has granted in-principle approval to repeal the Parliamentary Pensions Act, No. 1 of 1971 of the National Council of State, at its meeting held on 16 June 2025.

In line with the government’s pledge to all Sri Lankans who supported the vision of “A Prosperous Country, a Beautiful Life” outlined in the Government Policy Statement, the Legal Draftsman has prepared a Bill to repeal the Parliamentary Pensions Act, with the objective of abolishing pension entitlements currently granted to elected Members of Parliament and their spouses.

The Attorney General has given clearance for the draft Bill.

Accordingly, the Cabinet has approved the proposal submitted by the Minister of Justice and National Integration to publish the Bill in the Government Gazette and subsequently present it to Parliament for approval.
