The Cabinet of Ministers has approved a proposal to procure five new power sets to be deployed for suburban and long-distance passenger services, aiming to ease congestion and improve the reliability of Sri Lanka’s railway network.
The decision follows concerns raised by the Railway Department over a critical shortage of functioning power sets, particularly in suburban areas. The limited number of operational trains has resulted in persistent overcrowding and frequent service interruptions, according to a statement issued by the Department of Government Information.
Many of the existing power sets have been in operation for over two decades, making them increasingly vulnerable to breakdowns and delays.
Recent assessments indicate that the Railway Department requires a minimum of 96 power sets to sustain its current service levels.
In light of this, the Cabinet has approved the proposal submitted by the Minister of Transport, Highways, Ports, and Civil Aviation to procure five new power sets. These units will be allocated to both suburban and long-distance routes, aiming to boost capacity and improve commuter experience.
This move marks a significant step toward revitalizing the country’s aging rail infrastructure and addressing long-standing issues faced by daily rail passengers.
