Cabinet Approves Review of Outdated Public Service Regulations

The Cabinet of Ministers has approved a proposal to review and simplify existing public service rules and regulations by gathering input from relevant officers and the public.

Speaking at today’s (05) Cabinet press conference, Cabinet Spokesman Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa highlighted that Sri Lanka’s district and divisional administration system is still governed by ordinances enacted during British colonial rule and parliamentary regulations from 1950 to 1970. Many of these regulations were established in an era when transport and communication were far less developed, making them outdated and inefficient in the present context.

Dr. Jayatissa emphasized the need for urgent legal and administrative reforms to remove these obstacles and enhance public service efficiency.

Accordingly, the Cabinet approved the proposal by the Minister of Public Administration, Provincial Councils, and Local Government to establish a committee, led by the Ministry Secretary and comprising relevant officials. This committee will gather public and officer feedback to prepare recommendations for updating existing rules, regulations, and procedures.
