Former Deputy Leader of the United National Party and Member of Parliament Ravi Karunanayake has criticized the Central Bank’s current approach to controlling inflation, stating that it is engaged in “retail work” rather than focusing on broader economic development.
Speaking at a media briefing, Karunanayake emphasized that the country urgently needs to boost its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) through sustainable and productive revenue sources. He stressed the importance of effective supply management in achieving this goal.
Commenting on the Central Bank’s measures to curb inflation, the MP noted that the strategy has primarily focused on restricting the circulation of money. “Anyone can do that,” he said, implying that such a basic approach lacks depth and long-term vision.
Karunanayake further stated that the real responsibility of the government is to develop the country through well-planned, strategic efforts. He urged the authorities to act with greater precision and caution when addressing economic challenges.
