Chinese Supermarket in Colombo Fined Rs. 300,000 for Violating Consumer Protection Laws

July 2, 2026

The Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court has imposed a Rs. 300,000 fine on a Chinese supermarket located on R.A. De Mel Mawatha, Colombo 03, after finding it guilty of violating provisions of the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) Act.

According to the Consumer Affairs Authority, the Court also ordered the destruction of all goods produced as case exhibits.

The judgment followed legal action initiated by the CAA after its officers uncovered multiple violations during a special inspection carried out at the supermarket.

Investigations revealed that the trader had offered goods for sale without displaying prices, failed to maintain supplier invoices and purchase receipts, and sold products that did not carry mandatory label information, including the Maximum Retail Price (MRP), manufacturer or importer details, and other particulars required by law.

The CAA stated that such practices are misleading to consumers and undermine fair and transparent trade practices.

The Authority has urged the public to report consumer rights violations, including overpricing, failure to display prices, and the sale of products without mandatory labels, by contacting the CAA hotline 1977.
