The Ministry of Public Security has announced an investigation into the alleged illegal issuance of foreign travel passports in recent times, raising serious concerns about potential abuse of the country’s immigration system.
Minister Ananda Wijepala stated that the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has been assigned to lead the probe, following reports that some individuals may have obtained passports through unauthorized or unlawful means.
Preliminary findings suggest that several passports may have been issued in violation of established legal procedures, prompting fears of systematic misuse.
The latest incident linked to the investigation involves the alleged issuance of a forged passport to a known organized criminal, Kehelbaddara Padme, who is currently residing overseas. Authorities believe the fake passport was created and delivered to him through illegal channels.
In connection with this case, three individuals have been arrested, including an Assistant Controller of Immigration and Emigration, who is suspected of playing a direct role in facilitating the fraudulent activity.
