CMC’s inaugural 2026 budget defeated by three-vote margin

December 23, 2025

The inaugural 2026 budget proposal of the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC), controlled by the ruling National People’s Power (NPP), was defeated today by a majority of three votes.

According to an Ada Derana reporter, the budget received 57 votes in favour, while 60 councillors voted against it.

The votes of two members of Sarvajana Balaya proved decisive in the outcome, resulting in the defeat of the NPP’s budget proposal by a three-vote margin.

At the most recent Local Government Elections, the NPP secured control of the CMC, and its mayoral candidate Vraie Cally Balthazar was elected Mayor of Colombo after obtaining 61 votes.
