The government has unveiled plans to renovate the Colombo Central Bus Stand within the next year as part of the “Clean Sri Lanka” national initiative, the President’s Media Division (PMD) announced.
In addition to Colombo, approximately 50 major bus stands across the country are also set to be upgraded with the support of the Sri Lanka Air Force, according to the PMD statement.
The refurbishment of the Colombo Central Bus Stand—originally established in 1964 and spanning 1.42 hectares—will include upgrades to several key facilities, including the canteen, rest areas, ticket counters, administrative offices, operations room, and driver quarters. The central terminal currently accommodates 1,500 to 2,000 buses daily.
Details of the project were revealed during a discussion held at the Presidential Secretariat on the “Clean Sri Lanka” initiative.
The meeting was attended by Minister of Transport, Highways, Ports and Civil Aviation Bimal Rathnayake, Secretary to the President Dr. Nandika Sanath Kumanayake, Air Vice Marshal (Retired) Sampath Thuyacontha, the Secretary of Defence, senior officers of the Sri Lanka Air Force, and other key government officials.
The project is seen as a significant step in modernizing public transport infrastructure and improving cleanliness and passenger experience nationwide.
