Commercial Bank Becomes First in Sri Lanka to Enable Google Pay for Visa Cardholders

November 19, 2025

Commercial Bank has made history by becoming the first bank in Sri Lanka to facilitate payments through Google Pay activation.

The initiative has been introduced in collaboration with Google and Visa, a global leader in digital payments. As a result, Commercial Bank is now the only bank in the Sri Lankan market to offer Google Pay support for its Visa cardholders.

Through this partnership, Visa’s trusted global network and Google’s secure, intuitive interface have been seamlessly integrated into Commercial Bank’s advanced digital banking ecosystem.

Commercial Bank’s Visa debit and credit cardholders can now easily add their cards to the Google Wallet app, with authentication available via a one-time password (OTP) or through the bank’s call center.

This enables customers to make secure, contactless payments using only their smartphones at any point-of-sale (POS) terminal that accepts Visa. With this feature, cardholders no longer need to carry physical cards or cash.

“The partnership with Visa and Google marks a significant milestone in our ongoing commitment to enhance the digital payment experience for customers. As the largest private sector bank in Sri Lanka, this collaboration further strengthens our ability to offer seamless, secure and contactless transactions anywhere, anytime. This partnership will not only enhance security and convenience for millions of customers, but also accelerate the country’s transition to a more technologically enabled financial ecosystem. It reflects the bank’s long-term strategy of bringing world-class digital solutions to Sri Lankan consumers and businesses,” said Sanath Manatunga, CEO of Commercial Bank.
