The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has arrested Commissioner General of Prisons Thushara Upuldeniya, who was suspended from duty yesterday (June 9), police confirmed.
According to reports, the arrest was made this evening in connection with an ongoing investigation into allegations that Upuldeniya aided and abetted the unlawful release of an inmate from Anuradhapura Prison under the Presidential Pardon granted for Vesak Poya.
The suspect is currently in CID custody and is scheduled to be produced before Magistrate’s Court No. 01 at the Aluthkade Courts Complex tomorrow (June 10).
The CID continues to carry out further investigations into the matter.
Earlier today, the Cabinet of Ministers decided to suspend Upuldeniya from his duties. The decision was made during the weekly Cabinet meeting chaired by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, in light of the allegations surrounding the misuse of the Presidential Pardon process.
The suspension aims to facilitate an impartial investigation into the incident.
