Constitutional Council Approves L.S.P. Jayarathna as Sri Lanka’s New Auditor General

February 3, 2026

Ending nearly ten months of institutional deadlock, the Constitutional Council (CC) today unanimously approved the appointment of Senior Deputy Auditor General L. S. P. Jayarathna as the new Auditor General of Sri Lanka.

The decision was reached at a CC meeting chaired by Jagath Wickramaratne, bringing to a close a prolonged vacancy that followed the retirement of former Auditor General Chulantha Wickramaratne in April 2025.

The post had remained vacant after the Constitutional Council rejected four nominees previously proposed by the President over the past several months. Those rejections triggered considerable public debate and raised concerns about the independence of the National Audit Office, particularly after the controversial nomination of a serving military officer in December.

Ms. Jayarathna, a long-serving official of the National Audit Office, was nominated by Anura Kumara Dissanayake, with the Constitutional Council granting unanimous approval for her appointment.
