Constitutional Council to Decide on New Auditor General Appointment Today

Parliament Speaker Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne announced that a decision regarding the appointment of a new Auditor General will be made today during a meeting of the Constitutional Council scheduled for 2:00 p.m.

The Speaker made this announcement in response to a question raised by Colombo District MP Dr. Harsha de Silva during this morning’s parliamentary session.

“There should be an Auditor General in this country. It has now been 41 days without one,” Dr. de Silva stated. “For the past 225 years, there has been a continuous tradition of appointing an Auditor General. Is there any particular reason why the government has not appointed the most senior officer in the state audit service?”

Responding to the inquiry, Speaker Wickramaratne said, “The Constitutional Council will convene at 2:00 p.m. today. We have received proposals, and the President has submitted his recommendations. These matters will be considered during the meeting.”
