Consumer Affairs Authority Collects Over 54 Million Rupees in Fines Through Raids

The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) has reported collecting over 54 million rupees in fines through raids conducted so far this year.

According to Director Asela Bandara, these fines were imposed during 3,521 shop raids, with the majority of these raids focusing on rice stocks. Legal action has been taken against 434 shops for selling rice above the controlled price and 871 shops for failing to display prices.

In a recent operation, officials from the CAA’s Galle District Unit seized a stock of Keeri Samba rice, which was allegedly being prepared for illegal sale at inflated prices in a warehouse in Dangedara, Galle. The raid was carried out based on information received from officials, resulting in the discovery of fifty-five 5kg bags of Keeri Samba rice.

Meanwhile, the Consumer Affairs Authority also conducted raids in Nuwara Eliya yesterday, targeting traders selling rice at inflated prices. According to our correspondent, the CAA has taken steps to file lawsuits against traders involved in selling rice at inflated prices and those who failed to display price lists.
