Consumers, Not Corporations, Should Be Protected in Oil Pricing – Ravi Karunanayake

July 11, 2025

Former Deputy Leader of the United National Party and Member of Parliament, Ravi Karunanayake, has emphasized that decisions on oil pricing should prioritize the protection of consumers, not corporations.

Speaking to the media, the MP stated that safeguarding the interests of the public must come before protecting institutions like the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC).

He noted that the CPC is only one component of Sri Lanka’s broader fuel sector and that competition among multiple suppliers is the key to fair pricing and stability in the market.

“There is competition in the fuel sector, and that’s where price control comes from,” Karunanayake said, stressing the importance of allowing multiple fuel suppliers to operate in the country to ensure a steady and competitive supply.
