Deep Depression Moves North of Sri Lanka; Showers Expected in Several Areas

December 1, 2025

The Department of Meteorology reports that the deep depression previously affecting Sri Lanka is now located about 300 km north-northeast of Kankesanthurai, positioned near latitude 12.3°N and longitude 80.6°E.

The system is expected to move further north, away from the island, and gradually weaken.

According to the forecast, a few spells of showers are likely in the Northern, Western, Sabaragamuwa, and Southern provinces, as well as in the Kandy and Nuwara Eliya districts.

The Department also noted that showers or thundershowers may occur in parts of the Uva Province, and the Batticaloa and Ampara districts after 2.00 p.m.

The public is kindly advised to take necessary precautions to minimise damage from temporary strong winds and lightning associated with thundershowers.
