The Ministry of Education has directed all provincial and zonal education directors to urgently submit reports on the presence of surplus teachers in schools across the country.
Deputy Minister of Education, Madhura Seneviratne, noted that some rural schools with low student populations have reported having an excess number of teachers. At the same time, other schools are facing critical teacher shortages.
He emphasized that this imbalance in teacher distribution is having a significant impact on the overall efficiency of the education system.
The Deputy Minister further stated that, as part of the education reforms scheduled to commence next year, the Ministry will take necessary steps to redistribute teachers more equitably across the island.
