Eid-ul-Fitr to Be Celebrated on Saturday in Sri Lanka

March 20, 2026

The Muslim community in Sri Lanka will celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr on Saturday (21), as the new crescent moon for the month of Shawwal was not sighted today (19), according to the Colombo Grand Mosque.

As the crescent moon was not visible, the month of Ramadan will complete 30 days, and the first day of Shawwal will begin on Saturday, March 21.

This was unanimously declared by the Department of Muslim Religious and Cultural Affairs, the Colombo Grand Mosque and the All Ceylon Jamiyyathul Ulama.

Eid-ul-Fitr, known as the “festival of breaking the fast,” marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan.

It is a major religious holiday celebrated by Muslims worldwide, bringing together families, friends and communities for prayers and celebrations.

The festival falls on the first day of Shawwal, the tenth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, and its date varies across countries depending on the sighting of the crescent moon.
