Election Commission Given One Week to Finalize Leadership in 166 Hung Local Bodies

The Election Commission has announced that it has been granted one week to appoint the heads of 166 local government institutions where no single party has secured a majority.

The Commission stated that, to date, only the lists of elected members for these institutions have been published in the Gazette. It emphasized that the names of individuals selected for key leadership roles — including mayors, deputy mayors, chairpersons, and vice chairpersons — must be submitted within the coming week.

The National Election Commission also confirmed that gazette notifications have already been issued for all local government bodies where one party has achieved a clear majority, and the respective leadership appointments have been made accordingly.

As of now, the lists of members elected to all local government institutions across the administrative districts have been made public.

The official term of local government institutions is set to begin tomorrow. However, Minister of Public Administration, Provincial Councils and Local Government, Professor Chandana Aberathne, noted that only 150 local authorities will be in a position to establish governance from day one.
