Election Commission Ready to Conduct Local Government Polls Pending Supreme Court Rulings

Chairman of the Election Commission, R.M.A.L. Ratnayake, stated that preparations are in place to hold the Local Government (LG) elections as soon as the Supreme Court delivers its rulings on related cases to the Speaker of Parliament.

Speaking at a media briefing, Ratnayake also confirmed that Provincial Council Elections will be conducted once the necessary amendments to the Provincial Council Election Act are passed in Parliament.

“Many have inquired about the timing of the Local Government elections. The Election Commission is fully prepared to proceed as soon as the Supreme Court rulings are communicated to the Speaker,” he said.

Regarding Provincial Council elections, he emphasized that legal amendments must be made before the polls can take place. “Once Parliament enacts the required changes, the Election Commission will proceed accordingly,” he added.

Ratnayake also assured that the government has allocated the necessary funds to conduct the Local Government elections.
