The Election Commission of Sri Lanka says it is prepared to conduct the Provincial Council elections at any time once the necessary legal provisions are approved by Parliament based on recommendations made by the Parliamentary Select Committee.
According to officials, the Attorney General’s Department of Sri Lanka has already submitted observations to the relevant committee regarding:
- Existing legal obstacles preventing the elections from being held
- Measures required to resolve those issues
The Parliamentary Select Committee was appointed to examine:
- The electoral system to be used for Provincial Council elections
- Necessary legal and procedural reforms
As part of the process, the Committee sought views from both:
- The Election Commission
- The Attorney General’s Department
The discussion took place during a recent committee meeting held in Parliament under the chairmanship of Vijitha Herath.
During the meeting, the Election Commission clarified that it is institutionally ready to conduct the elections once Parliament finalizes the required legal framework.
