“Elephants Cannot Be Driven Away Unless They Are Collected” – Ravi Karunanayake

September 2, 2025

Former Deputy Leader of the United National Party (UNP), MP Ravi Karunanayake, says that long-time supporters of the party have fallen silent today due to frustration.

Addressing the media, Karunanayake highlighted that the foundations of key sectors such as education, agriculture, irrigation, hydropower, the Mahaweli Development Programme, the Mahapola Scholarship Fund, the university system, and major hydropower plants were all laid under UNP governments.

He stressed that disappointed party members can be brought back by fostering unity and cooperation.

Karunanayake acknowledged that, as a long-standing member, he too has differences within the party. However, he added that “an elephant who says he is collecting elephants should not be attacked,” calling for a spirit of collaboration to rebuild the UNP.
