The Department of Meteorology says a low-level atmospheric disturbance located to the east of Sri Lanka continues to influence the island’s weather conditions.
Accordingly, enhanced showery conditions are expected in the Northern, Eastern, and Uva Provinces over the coming days from January 5, 2026.
Showers are expected at times in the Eastern and Uva Provinces, as well as in the Polonnaruwa, Matale, and Nuwara Eliya districts. A few showers may also occur in the Anuradhapura and Hambantota districts.
Meanwhile, showers or thundershowers may develop at a few locations in the Sabaragamuwa Province and in the Kalutara, Galle, and Matara districts after 2.00 p.m.
The Meteorology Department also warned that strong winds of up to 50 kmph can be expected at times over the eastern slopes of the central hills, Northern, North-Central, North-Western, and Eastern Provinces, as well as in the Hambantota, Gampaha, Colombo, and Monaragala districts.
The general public is advised to take necessary precautions to minimize damage caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
