EU GSP+ Monitoring Mission Meets Sri Lanka’s Foreign Minister, Reviews Progress on Reforms

A GSP+ Monitoring Mission from the European Union (EU) met with Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism, Vijitha Herath, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs during their official visit to Sri Lanka.

Minister Herath briefed the delegation on the government’s progress since taking office, particularly in combating bribery and corruption, strengthening democratic institutions, promoting human rights, and advancing the reconciliation process.

The EU team was also informed about upcoming legislative reforms and other measures that the government plans to implement to further these efforts.

Recalling the longstanding partnership between Sri Lanka and the EU across multiple sectors, Minister Herath expressed gratitude for the EU’s continued support—especially in aiding Sri Lanka’s economic recovery. He noted that the EU is Sri Lanka’s second-largest export market, playing a critical role in trade and development, according to a statement from the Ministry.

In response, the EU delegation conveyed a positive view of Sri Lanka’s recent progress and reaffirmed their commitment to supporting the country’s reform initiatives.

The visiting EU delegation, comprising senior officials, is in Sri Lanka to assess the nation’s implementation of the 27 international conventions required under the GSP+ trade preferences program.
