EX – Auditor General Says Government Officials Also Complicit in Institutional Corruption

Ex-Auditor General Chulantha Wickramaratne has stated that public servants share responsibility for some of the corruption uncovered within state institutions.

Wickramaratne, who served as the 41st Auditor General of Sri Lanka, retired from service yesterday (April 8). Speaking to the media at a farewell event held in Colombo, he reflected on his tenure and the challenges facing public accountability.

He emphasized that findings from the Committee on Public Enterprises (COPE) and the Committee on Public Accounts (COPA) have revealed that certain state officials were complicit in corrupt practices.

“Regardless of the directives given by politicians, government officials have a duty to act in accordance with the law,” Wickramaratne stressed, highlighting the critical role of integrity in public service.
