COLOMBO – A pivotal workshop, “A Path to Reform: Assessing Hate Speech Laws in Sri Lanka,” was held at the Mandarina Hotel, uniting legal experts, academics, and key stakeholders to explore comprehensive reforms to address hate speech. The event was organized under the International Programme for the Development of Communication (IPDC-UNESCO) in collaboration with the Media Law Forum.
Hezekiel Dlamini, Advisor for Communication & Information at UNESCO’s New Delhi Regional Office, served as the Guest of Honour, delivering a keynote address that examined the proposed hate speech policy reform document. He drew on global experiences to illustrate UNESCO’s ongoing efforts to combat hate speech through robust media policy frameworks.
Dr. Thusitha Abeysekara, Senior Lecturer in Law and Head of the Legal Studies Unit at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, provided an insightful presentation comparing hate speech legislation worldwide. He identified both challenges and opportunities in aligning Sri Lanka’s legal framework with international standards.
A discussion forum, moderated by AAL Viranjana Herath, Chairperson of the Media Law Forum, featured vibrant dialogue among participants from diverse fields. Attendees shared perspectives and feedback on the proposed reforms, contributing to a collaborative effort to create effective policy measures to tackle hate speech in Sri Lanka.
This workshop marks a significant step toward refining legal strategies to address hate speech while fostering greater collaboration among local and international stakeholders.
