The Ministry of Finance Sri Lanka has lodged complaints with law enforcement agencies and relevant institutions following a cyberattack that breached the computer system of its External Resources Department.
According to a statement, the breach was identified in connection with a foreign currency payment made in January 2026. The Ministry promptly informed the Sri Lanka Computer Emergency Readiness Team and the Computer Crime Investigation Division.
Based on initial findings, a complaint was subsequently filed with the Criminal Investigation Department Sri Lanka and the Financial Intelligence Unit Central Bank of Sri Lanka for further investigation.
The Ministry stated that a preliminary internal inquiry has already been conducted, with necessary corrective measures taken. Disciplinary action has also been initiated against several officials in connection with the incident.
Authorities further noted that the Ministry is fully cooperating with ongoing investigations and has provided all required information to support law enforcement efforts.
“Since investigations are currently underway, updates regarding this matter will be provided at an appropriate time so as not to interfere with the process,” the statement said.
The Ministry added that, in line with existing agreements between Sri Lanka and foreign jurisdictions, appropriate future actions will be taken in relation to the incident.
