The National Council for Road Safety has confirmed that fines are now being imposed for violations of the seat belt law.
Council Chairman Manjula Kularatne stated that the three-month grace period ended on December 24.
Accordingly, all drivers and passengers travelling on expressways are now required to wear seat belts.
Drivers and front-seat passengers on all other roads are also required to wear seat belts.
Kularatne added that police have been instructed to enforce this regulation strictly.
