Foreign Minister Urges Canada to Curb Activities Promoting Separatism

November 25, 2025

Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath has called on the Canadian government to take necessary steps to curb activities in Canada that promote separatist ideologies related to Sri Lanka.

The request was made during a meeting with Canadian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, Isabelle Catherine Martin.

Minister Herath urged the High Commissioner to convey to the authorities in Ottawa the importance of preventing events or movements that attempt to revive separatism or create divisions among Sri Lanka’s communities. He stressed that such activities undermine the Sri Lankan government’s efforts to promote national unity, reconciliation, and peaceful coexistence.

The Minister further cautioned that unchecked separatist campaigns could also harm the bilateral understanding and relationship between the two countries.

High Commissioner Martin reiterated that the LTTE remains a proscribed terrorist organisation in Canada, and that the Canadian federal government does not recognise any logos or symbols linked to the LTTE or other separatist ideologies.

She reaffirmed Canada’s commitment to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Sri Lanka.
