Gold Prices Reach Historic Highs Globally and in Sri Lanka

The price of gold in the global market has surged to its highest level in history.

As of today (17), the price of an ounce of gold has reached a record-breaking USD 3,345.

Commenting on the development, Indika Bandara, Assistant Director of the Precious Metal Assaying and Hallmarking Office at the National Gem & Jewellery Authority (NGJA), attributed the surge to several factors. He noted that following a tariff announcement by U.S. President Donald Trump, gold prices soared to historic highs. Bandara further cited the depreciation of the U.S. Dollar, investors seeking gold as a safe-haven asset, and the escalating trade tensions between the United States and China as key contributors to the increase.

Reflecting the global trend, gold prices in Sri Lanka have also climbed to unprecedented levels.

According to the GOLDCeylon Gold News Network, which provides reliable daily updates on local gold prices, the price of a pound of 22-carat gold in Sea Street, Colombo 11 (Hettiweediya) — the heart of Sri Lanka’s gold trade — has reached an all-time high of Rs. 242,000 as of this morning. The price of a pound of 24-carat gold has similarly risen to Rs. 262,000.

By comparison, on the previous day (16), the price of 22-carat gold stood at Rs. 238,300, while 24-carat gold was priced at Rs. 259,000 in the Sri Lankan market.
