Government Aims to Hold Provincial Council Elections in Early 2026

August 18, 2025

Leader of the House and Minister Bimal Rathnayake announced that the government is aiming to hold Provincial Council Elections within the first half of 2026.

Speaking to the media, the Minister noted that the Presidential Election was conducted in November 2024, followed by the Local Government Election earlier this year. He emphasized that the government intends to ensure the Provincial Council Elections are held on schedule, despite certain legal challenges.

Minister Rathnayake expressed confidence that these obstacles can be resolved, adding that the government prioritizes completing the Provincial Council polls before introducing any constitutional reforms.

“We expect to hold the Provincial Council Election first, after which a comprehensive political plan for a Constitutional Amendment will be considered,” he stated.
