Government Backs Motion to Abolish MPs’ Pensions – PM Harini Amarasuriya
Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya stated that all government members support the abolition of MPs’ pensions, emphasizing the need to reduce parliamentary privileges.
Speaking in Parliament yesterday (07), following UNP Deputy Leader MP Ravi Karunanayake’s private member’s motion to abolish MPs’ pensions, the Prime Minister expressed both support and disappointment.
“We have been discussing the reduction of parliamentary privileges and the abolition of MPs’ pensions since 2001. I appreciate that an opposition member has finally presented this motion, and all of us in government fully support it. However, I am saddened that some opposition MPs are still unwilling to embrace this change. Instead of supporting the motion, they continue to focus on unrelated topics, showing reluctance to give up privileges.”
The motion is expected to spark further debate as Parliament considers ending the pension scheme for its members.
